Building Information Modelling community of practice: Advancing innovation in public procurement

The BIM and Public Procurement Community of Practice (CoP) is on a mission to transform public procurement across the EU by accelerating the adoption of Building Information Modelling (BIM). With a focus on collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and tackling barriers, the CoP equips governments and stakeholders with the tools and support needed to seamlessly integrate BIM into procurement processes.

By bringing together public authorities, policymakers, SMEs, and industry experts, the CoP aims to establish BIM as the standard practice in public procurement. Through shared best practices and tackling common challenges, the community strives to build a future where BIM drives resilience, enhances sustainability, and sparks innovation in procurement policies across Europe.

Why is BIM integration important and how the community addresses it?

Recent research has highlighted significant gaps in the support available for integrating BIM into public procurement. To bridge these gaps, the CoP is conducting structured activities aimed at equipping stakeholders with the tools and knowledge necessary for effective BIM adoption.

Key deliverables include:

  • An open survey: A survey designed to gather actionable insights on successful policies, tools, and practices for BIM integration, forming the basis for tailored guidance.
  • A validation workshop: A workshop bringing together public procurement bodies, policymakers, and industry representatives to refine recommendations and lay the foundation for comprehensive guidelines.
  • Translation of best practices: Best practices will be adapted and translated into multiple languages to ensure accessibility and usability for a broader audience.
  • Policy brief and guidance document: These documents will synthesise insights from the survey and workshop, offering actionable strategies to overcome BIM adoption barriers and promote its use in sustainable procurement.

Fostering collaboration and innovation

The CoP serves as a dynamic platform for collaboration, enabling stakeholders to exchange experiences, explore cutting-edge BIM technologies, and influence EU policies. By promoting open standards and reducing costs for SMEs, the CoP supports EU sustainability goals, fostering transparency and interoperability in public procurement.

What's next for the community?

The CoP invites public authorities, SMEs, and other stakeholders to actively engage in the open survey and participate in the upcoming workshop. These initiatives are designed to collaboratively develop practical guidance for advancing BIM integration in public procurement across Europe.

Stay tuned for updates on the survey results, workshop outcomes, and the release of the policy brief and guidance document.
